How Men Can Properly Care For Their Mental Health
June is National Men’s Health Awareness Month. The goal is to raise awareness for mental health, as men are less likely to seek help than women. For this reason, they’re more likely to have more severe issues. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, over 6 million men suffer from depression each year. More than 3 million men in the U.S. have panic disorder, agoraphobia or any other phobia, and 2.3 million Americans are affected by bipolar disorder with an equal amount of men and women developing the illness. The age of onset for men is between 16 to 25 years old. One of the leading causes of disability in America is schizophrenia. About 3.5 million people in the U.S. have been diagnosed, and 90% of those who are diagnosed by the age of 30 are men. “Men are more likely to hold that stuff in until it gets to a breaking point, and then something counterproductive or self-destructive happens,” said Dr. Joseph Marzano of Advanced Counseling Solutions. There are effective treatments for mental health disorders. Asking for help may be difficult for men, but going without treatment may only make the situation worse, experts say. Everyday activities such as exercise, diet and regular sleep can improve mental health. “Acknowledging that you’re struggling with something is also a sign of strength. Acknowledging that you need help with something is something that men weren’t always encouraged to do,’ Marzano said. If you or someone you know is in a crisis, get help immediately. You can call 911 or call or text the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988.
